Push-up for what?

See what I did there?!? Happy Hump day! For today’s #workoutwednesday and #nationalfitnessday I wanted to quickly share this push-up workout!

Now I have to tell you I dislike push-ups with a passion. They are tough, tough, tough and I just am not naturally good at them. But I decided that I needed to focus on this movement and I literally make myself do them every day. They are a great test of your strength and can help strengthen your entire body. They are essentially a moving plank!

Some notes to keep in mind while you do this:

  1. always keep your shoulders over your wrists
  2. your core should ALWAYS be engaged
  3. your glutes should be engaged as well
  4. use your breath to help you push up and push away the floor
  5. try as many as you can on your toes but drop to assisted if your form starts to go
  6. on the up and downs start in a forearm plank. As you move to the up position replace your elbows with your palms. This will ensure your shoulders stay stacked over your wrists.

Don’t forget to stretch your chest after this doozy. How did you do?? How else are you celebrating #nationalfitnessday ??

The Struggle is REAL

img_8080
just do it // Washington, DC

Back in 2015 I had a wild idea about starting a blog about my fit life and all of the fit fashion that was taking over my life. I was studying to be a certified ACE group fitness instructor, finally following my dream to teach potentially at Lifetime Fitness and managing a long distance relationship and full time job.

Then I moved. To El Paso. It was a totally different city where I didnt know a single soul. But that was ok; I made friends at the gym, discovered Pure Barre, and pursued some of my first teaching opportunities.

We made yet another move to San Antonio and I disappeared!!! #whereinTexasisMarilena

The move proved to be a challenge on my work life balance and I fell in the same old routine that most of us keep. Wake up, get ready, go to work, possibly work out before or after, head home, eat, sleep, repeate, etc.

I did manage to pursue a recent dream of mine during this monotonous routine. I became a Pure Barre Teacher!!! It was the most challenging format I have studied and studied and studied. Teachers make it look so EASY!! Although, it was the most difficult, it has been the most rewarding. And to think it has only been a few months!

I tell you this because even during the busiest times of your life, there are cracks of time where you can fit in your dreams. I lost sight of this. Focusing only on the 8-5p (read: 7a-6p), while important, it is not my motivation. Helping women and men challenge their bodies, change their bodies and see those changes is what motivates me. Being the person they hate during the moment but love when they see the results, that’s the part I love.

I tell you all of this to remind you to still pursue your dreams. No dream is a small dream if you believe in it and work for it. You got this!

Ok, so now that you are all inspired and I am inspired let’s get this whole blogging thing going, again! After all, I am going to BlogFest 2017 and need to have something to show for it 🙂

Stay fit,

Marilena

Skirting the Issue

Hey hey!!! Big news is here! The hiatus is because we just relocated to San Antonio!! The move was bittersweet and I miss the connections I made while in El Paso, but I am thrilled to be back in central Texas and with all the green!!! The one thing I’m not too excited about is the humidity. I know it’s amazing for your skin but man do I miss that dry heat!

Blogfest is coming up in one week (!!!) I can not wait to get out to California and meet so many inspiring bloggers, like my roommate! Since I have packing and outfit making on my mind I wanted to share a post about a piece of active wear that has my full attention – the skirt. I have found so many great options from Nike, Adidas and of course Lululemon.

It’s such a great piece for people like me who don’t necessarily like wearing short tight shorts. The skirt pairs well with all shoes from sneakers to flips and from tanks to long sleeves.

Take a look at my favorites in my closet and those I have found around town. Do you have a go to skirt you throw on? I’m sure there is a brand I’m overlooking so let me know in the comments below!!
Happy Wednesday!!

Nikecourt Power Skirt in Black

-why I love this- this is definitely my go to everyday skirt. The DryFit material is so comfortable. Plus it matches my zip up I’ve had forever that has yet to fade!!

Lululemon City Sky Run by Skirt in camou

-why I love this- it’s slimming and still has a bit of flare with the pleating at the bottom.

Lululemon Pace Rival Skirt II

-why I love this- I don’t own any of the new colors, I actually found a great print about a year ago on sale (double great!) and I can’t stop wearing it. The pleats in the back are a little longer so not only is it slimming but it gives great overage too!

Adidas Barricade Skort
-why I love this- so I don’t have this skirt although the preferated skirt has me interested! What I have found with the Adidas skirts though is they are definitely shorter than all the rest.

For my dream closet::

Monreal Back Flip Skirt

Heroine Sport Training Skirt

It’s been awhile…

since I have shared a workout with you! For today’s #workoutwednesday I am sharing a lower rep workout that you can use to challenge yourself with the weights you choose and give you the time to focus on your form.

I began this workout with an interval run I had preprogrammed in the Interval Timer app I used in my boot-camp classes.

After the run was completed, I grabbed a heavy and a heavier set of dumbbells so I could switch back and forth depending on the exercise I was completing.I completed each round three times with a 30-60 second rest in between rounds. Try to move from one exercise right in to the next without taking a break. This will keep your heart rate up and keep burning those calories! With each exercise you will see that the rep count is low so use that time to really challenge yourself and focus on your form.

At the end of this workout you should definitely feel it and feel GREAT about leaving it all out on the gym floor!!!

wednesdayworkout4wednesdayworkout1wednesdayworkout2wednesdayworkout3

a few notes:

With your power push ups focus on keeping your core tight as you push through your hands to push off the ground.

For your deadlifts keep a slight bend in your knees and keep your back straight as you lower the weights down along the front of your legs. It is as if you are shaving your legs.

With your triceps extension focus on keeping your elbows glued to the side of your head. You don’t want your elbows facing out you want them facing straight ahead.

For the squat with the bicep curl, keep your knees over your ankles and your chest proud. You can anchor your elbow into your knee as you do the isolated curl.

For my favorite, the man maker, this is an all inclusive move that will really exhaust all that you have left in your tank. With the weights you will fall into a push up (similar to a burpee), do a renegade row on each side, jump your feet in and then push up to a squat, to a curl to an over head press. That is one! Trust me 5 will be enough 🙂 Through out make sure you are keeping your core engaged, knees over your ankles and smile on your face 🙂

Use the reverse lunges with a twist as a chance to actively recover from the full body move of the manmaker, but don’t forget form. In your lunge you want a 90 degree angle in each leg and your front knee over your ankle.

If you ever have any questions on how to complete exercises you can always send me a note!

Let me know what you think!!!

Keep sweating!

My Sweat Style – Delivery Review

Hello Friends!!

Subscription boxes seem to be all the rage these days and I am not going to lie, I love them. There is something about coming home to a box on my doorstep full of surprises. I think it reminds me of when I was in college and my mom would send me random care packages with items I didn’t realize I needed but loved as soon as I opened them!

I have tried out a few subscriptions including Blue Apron, PopSugar Must Have and now I am sharing my newest fitness focused box of surprises, My Sweat Style!

findyoursweatstyle

While this wasn’t my first delivery, I received my first box back in November, I wanted to share it with you because the process and experiences have both been awesome!

My Sweat Style is a fitness focused subscription box that delivers a curated selection of premium activewear all within your specifications. When you first visit My Sweat Style, you will fill out a profile answering questions including what kind of workouts you participate in, what your hobbies are and of course your sizes.

Once you complete this profile, you can then say how important brand, fabric, fit and price are to you. If there is anything else you want to let your stylist know you can include that as well.

Enter your payment information and wait for the email that says your SweatStyle is on its way!

It is $20 when they ship you your box. When you receive your box there is an itemized receipt that states how much each item is and whatever you keep will be charged to the card you entered into your profile. You can take 5 days to try on the items and make your selection. Then return the ones you don’t want!

A little bonus, if you keep 3 or more items they will give you 20% off your total and apply the $20 Sweat fee you already paid.

According to their website, tops range from $35-$125, bottoms range from $55-$140, sports bras from $35-$100 and outerwear from $50-$250. To ensure you don’t get shipped items outside of your budget (like I did in November) there is a question on how important price is to you.

Lets talk about what I received this go around! (I have linked each item so you can see them on a model)

Unfortunately, just like the last time, I returned all five pieces. But unlike last time I loved most of the pieces at first glance, the fits were all just a little off for me. The Danielle top was super cute but a little sort for my taste, the built in bra was also a little big. The python pants felt awesome but I wasn’t crazy about the length. I also couldn’t justify keeping another black work out tank since I have about 10 already. The Varley croc crop was cute, but I didn’t feel like a must have. Finally, the Koral leggings were AMAZING!!! The feel of the fabric and the color were awesome. You can’t tell in my picture but they are navy and black and felt like a dream on. One problem, they were WAY too small! I have never worn this brand or tried it on so unfortunately I did not know they ran so small.

Even though I did not keep anything, I was exposed to two new brands that I had not tried before. I need to tweak my profile and keep my fingers crossed that more works out for me in May!

Have you tried My Sweat Style? What was your experience and what did you get??

XOXO,

Marilena
