noun | well-ness | \ˈwel-nəs\
: the quality or state of being healthy
What does wellness mean to you? Is it just related to nutrition? Physical strength or mental stability?
It is a complex question and complex word that means something different to everyone. After reading the blog post on Run to the Finish about Amanda’s experience at Wellfit Malibu, her question of what it meant to me got me thinking… (and not just because of the awesome retreat I could potential attend :))
Wellness to me is all encompassing. It is not only a state of mind but also a healthy way of life. Wellness to me is challenging yourself physically but mentally, as well. But it does not mean obsessing over everything you eat or restricting what you eat or do.
A truly well person lives. They enjoy life and take care of their body and mind. I have stressful situations everyday! Between the never ending job search to moving to a new city as an adult, life can get lonely and discouraging.
What I have noticed is when I am truly well, when I am getting the workouts in that are fun and enjoyable to me, fueling my body with fresh veggies and lean protein and just taking in my current adventure, I can get through the stressful moments when they creep up.
It isn’t easy. I won’t lie, stress is a little booger, but when I take care of my body with true rest days to reset physically, mentally and emotionally and have a positive mindset, I know I have a good sense of wellness.
I have never attended or experienced a wellness/fitness retreat but it sounds like a place that would strengthen everyone of these areas for me. Between the hikes to clear my mind and challenge my body to the various workouts and scrumptious food (did you see the pictures???) this would feed my mind and body. It would give me memories and experiences to share with my future classes and to pull from when life gets real.
What makes you happy? What drives you? It may not be your day job but it could be your happy place that you go to after or before work. The hobby that you can’t wait to get to or talk about! How do you take care of your mind, body and spirit?
